The Pressure to Have It All Figured Out
🌟Weekly Inspiration🌟
In light of the springtime college admissions….I’ve been thinking about the pressure on adolescents today. So many kids feel like they have to be clear on themselves and have their whole life mapped out by such a young age nowadays. Shame on the adults for making them feel this way! Parents, teachers, coaches, and college counselors can all make kids feel like failures if they don’t see the roadmap clearly in front of them. In my opinion, an exciting part of adolescence and young adulthood is the process of exploring and trying new ideas/paths/relationships on for size. We adults need to stay out of their way and support their curiosity, risk-taking, and learning from wrong turns.
Ask Yourself:
Did I feel pressure to know what I wanted to do with my life from a young age? What was that experience like for me?
Did I feel the freedom to explore and be curious about interests/classes/majors?
Have I stayed true to my course at all times? Was it fun and exciting to steer off course at times?
If I’m honest with myself, do I feel pressure that my kid should have it all figured out?
Do I put pressure on my kid to “know their passions”?
How would I feel about my kid having an Undeclared major at college?
How would I feel if my kid picked a major that doesn’t immediately translate into a good job, but is a joy to them?
How alarming is it actually if my 16-year-old has their whole life scripted out already? What happens when things don’t go according to plan?
Any small shifts I could make?
Food for thought đź’ˇ. Have a great week.
